Great synopsis.

I will share a couple additional details. First, when I initially wrote about the watch, I had no idea it was being offered by Woolbright (as gifted by Hughes) because the listing for the watch on Christie’s website did not share this information (it only implied that the watch was Howard Hughes’). But in the full catalogue for the auction, Christie’s recounted the tall tale of Woolbright. However I did not see the full catalogue until I had already started to break this story wide open. By this I mean that even before I knew about Woolbright, I had already spoken with Paul B. Winn (as a result of his comment on my blog) which questioned its ownership by Hughes.
When I further informed Paul about the Woolbright connection, he was incredulous. It took me only a bit of digging in each of the two books I cited to realize that this story did not come close to adding up. Why would Hughes hire a man with a long criminal record and whom the St. Louis police department more than 30 years ago described as a “con-man, burglar and fence”?

One thing led to another and soon Christie’s was stonewalling, refusing to take my phone calls.

One other thing which I did not include in my article, but which I will note here is that in Woolbright’s obituary (he passed last year) there was no mention of his 6+ years of employment for one of the world’s most famous men.

Hmmm.

The point here is that there are so many pieces of this puzzle that do NOT add up. All Christie’s had to do was procure some evidence but they refused.

p.s. As for the misspelled buckle — Christie’s tells me this is not uncommon in this era. And they did highlight it in the photos.
