With sepia-toned dials, and luxurious pink gold cases, Vacheron Constantin have enriched their highly wearable Fiftysix collection with the new Fiftysix Automatic and Fiftysix Complete Calendar models.
If your daily wear timepiece is a Vacheron Constantin then as we say in Ireland “you’re doin’ ok”. But, everyday wearability is exactly what the Fiftysix collection is all about. The collection made its debut two years ago, and was deemed by many to be “entry-level”. However with its chilled aesthetics and classy, retro feel it has turned out to be much, much more than series aimed solely at dapper young stylistas.
As part of their Watches and Wonders 2020 releases, two new Fiftysix models have been unveiled, each featuring the agreeable combination of a brown dial paired with a 18ct. pink gold case.
The Fiftysix Automatic takes direct inspiration from the time-only Vacheron Constantin 6073 automatic timepiece from 1956, which engendered the collection in the first place. Clean styling ensures that there is plenty of empty dial space to appreciate the beautiful opaline centre / sunburst exterior of its surface. As with both models, the dial tone is complemented by 18ct pink gold hands, markers and stand-out Arabic numerals which display vintage proportions. For this model, a diminutive date window has been slipped in at the three o’clock location.
Turn it over and the superb Côtes de Genève decoration of the Vacheron Constantin automatic in-house calibre 1326 can be appreciated. The movement is equipped with a 22ct gold rotor, and has a power reserve of 48 hours.
The more complex of the two, the Fiftysix Complete Calendar model displays the day of the week, the date, the month and the moonphase. Notably, the moonphase will need no adjustments for the next 122 years, and in addition to its precision, its gold-rimmed crescent-shaped opening is particularly pleasing on the eye.
Inside this more complicated model, the Vacheron Constantin automatic in-house calibre 2460 QCL/1 also displays its superb Côtes de Genève decoration and 22kt gold rotor though a sapphire caseback. The movement beats at 28,800vph and it retains a 40 hour reserve of power.
Both models have the signature features of this relatively new collection including box-domed sapphire crystals which give them a hint of retro fuzziness when glimpsed side-on. They also carry 40mm cases which have the subtle of the marque’s Maltese Cross outline on their lugs. The company’s press releases term these cases “audacious” but maybe that is a step too far. This is Vacheron Constantin after all.
